Review: The Guardians of the Galaxy are back and ready to rock out as they battle the most fiendish foes from the farthest reaches of the cosmos!

When Guardians of the Galaxy became the surprise hit of the summer of 2014 a sequel was inevitable. The difficult task this time around is making a sequel that's as wild, vibrant, unconventional, and entertaining as the original without just repeating itself - and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does just that... and then some!

All of your favorite characters are back - Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Baby Groot (Vin Diesel), and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) are "heroes" for hire that can't help but rub people, principalities, and planets the wrong way.

Much like the first film, Vol. 2 keeps up the high-energy, the humor, quirky characters, pulse-pounding action, and breath-taking visuals, but this time around the story dives in and focuses on our characters. Writer-director James Gunn has established some of the most interesting and entertaining characters in years and wants the audience to truly understand who they are and what makes them tick without taking away from what we've come to love about this sector of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I can see some viewers not digging on this route, but personally I think it's just what's needed to keep these Guardians fresh, fun, and feeling like a real family.

Oh, and Kurt Russell is perfectly cast. Who else could be the man that Star Lord calls dad. And that's not a spoiler! It was in all the trailers and commercials. The story really revolves around the father-son relationship that Ego (Russell) and Star Lord never had. It's a very compelling story for this series and does a lot for its characters both in Vol. 2 and in possible future installments in the series. I don't want to say too much about it, but it's very surprising and extremely entertaining.

And I also wanted to mention the empath Mantis (Pom Klementieff) who brings attention to our heroes and their wants, needs, and fears. She is a wonderful edition to the cast. But, the real deal is our boy of blue - Yondo. Michael Rooker's Yondo is kind of secretly the best part and character of this movie. He's ten kinds of awesome and I'll leave it at that.

I can't believe it took me so long to see this one, but now that I have I cannot wait for the inevitability of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Until then I have two wonderful adventure films to revisit again and again.

Fun Fact: In the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, Taserface is a warrior from the cybernetically enhanced race known as The Stark. The Stark are a race that found Iron Man technology that accidentally crashed on their homeworld, and as a result, worship Tony Stark (Iron Man) as their god.
