Review:
After a girls' night out, awkward Deb (Maria Thayer) wakes up in the apartment of the hunky Ryan (Michael Cassidy). She's thrilled, he's not, but how they got there and what happened after are a bit on the fuzzy side. Deb is sent off to endure the "walk of shame", and if that wasn't bad enough, it turns life-threatening when the two realize that they are smack-dab in the middle of a full-on zombie apocalypse. Don't you hate it when that happens?
I wasn't expecting much from this one, but it really surprised me.
Night of the Living Deb
is zombie-comedy that is funny, sweet, and silly. The real reason that it works is because of star Maria Thayer as the one and only Deb. She's cute, incredibly awkward, and gut-busting funny. She really carries this movie, and does it very well. That girl's got spunk!
This is way more of a comedy than a zombie-horror movie. The zombies are around, but more for sight gags and other humorous purposes. The blood and gore are very minimal, either due to the budget or the tone of the movie, or both, but it works. You never really feel that anyone is in danger, which helps you to laugh more and enjoy the budding chemistry between Deb and Ryan. And Ray Wise (
Twin Peaks
,
Swamp Thing
) is awesome as the wealthy water tycoon Frank Waverly. He's having the best time with his role and it really shows on-screen.
Night of the Living Deb
is a zom-com that, much like
Shaun of the Dead
, has is funny and has a heart. This was funded through kickstarter and you can really feel that the people making this movie really love the material, characters, and movies. I think what I enjoyed most about it is its sincerity. I was pleasantly surprised and I think you will be, too. More fun than frightening, buta much needed fresh take on rom-coms and zombie flicks.
