Shawkat began acting in both film and television in 1999. She appeared in the feature film Three Kings as the daughter of the character Amir, and made an appearance on an episode of JAG.
Her first starring role came in 2001, when she won the role of Hannah Rayburn in the television series State of Grace, which appeared on the cable television channel Fox Family (subsequently renamed ABC Family) until 2002.
As Maeby F?nke, Shawkat was a regular cast member of Arrested Development for the entire run of the show (2003?2006).

Has two brothers.
Grew up in Palm Springs, CA.
Her maternal grandparents are actor Paul Burke of Valley of the Dolls (1967) fame and former dancer Peggy Pryor.

Good friends with Ellen Page, her co-star in Whip It.
Her great-great-grandfather, Martin P. Burke, was a New Orleans policeman in 1898.
Where Are They Now:
In 2009, she appeared as an Arab-American teen in Cherien Dabis' film Amreeka, and then starred alongside Ellen Page in Drew Barrymore's directorial debut Whip It. Also in 2009, she appeared in Whip It co-star Har Mar Superstar's music video for "Tall Boy."
In 2010, she appeared in The Runaways, a biographical movie about the band of the same name, playing a fictional version of the band's bassist.
Along with her Whip-It costars Har Mar and Ellen Page, Shawkat produces and writes a show for HBO called Stitch N' Bitch, about two girls who relocate from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in the hopes of becoming artists.
Shawkat has also been a guest vocalist on several tracks from indie-punk band Fake Problems' newest album Real Ghosts Caught on Tape.
