Wasson's acting career began in the 1970s with a role in the 1977 suspense thriller Rollercoaster. He was in two separate Vietnam War movies that both came out in 1978: The Boys in Company C (1978) -- in which he played a private -- and Go Tell the Spartans (1978) -- in which he played a corporal. He was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year - Actor for his performance in Four Friends (1982).
He starred in the 1984 suspense film Body Double, and had a lead role as Dr. Neil Gordon in the 1987 horror film Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. He has also made guest appearances in a number of TV series over the years, including The Bob Newhart Show, Phyllis, Skag, For Jenny with Love, M*A*S*H, Hart to Hart, Walker, Texas Ranger, Profiler, The Practice, Seven Days, The Secrets of Isis and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Often mistaken for Bill Maher.
Has a singer and songwriter credit in The Boys in Company C (1978).

Wasson is a reader for audio books, having narrated Stephen King's 2011 novel 11/22/63, and other books by Stephen King, as well as books by James Ellroy and John Grisham.
