Review: Newlyweds Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich) are celebrating their honeymoon by hiking through a secluded region of Hawaii. Their idyllic trek takes a dark turn when they come across hikers Nick (Timothy Olyphant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez), who claim that another couple has been brutally murdered. Far from civilization and unsure who to trust, Cydney and Cliff soon get locked into a terrifying battle for survival.
A Perfect Getaway is a fun, unpredictable beach thriller with a fantastic cast. Funny man Steve Zahn does a great job playing a far more serious character than some may be accustomed (especially if you're a fan of Strange Wilderness). The always great Timothy Olyphant is also brilliant playing a mysterious adventure seeker with a long history of military experience. Fans of Thor and The Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will also recognize a familiar face in Chris Hemsworth. The often hammer-wielding hero now takes the form of a brutish beach bum with a bit of an anger problem. I like that this combination keeps things simple and straight forward while also keeping the viewer intrigued by the mystery. It's hard to decipher who is who, and what is what in the grand scheme of all of the eerie disappearances and murders surrounding the island. I like a film that keeps you guessing and doesn't necessarily insult your intelligence. Throw in a bunch of action and some gratuitous violence and you have a solid thriller film. This film certainly will not win any awards, but the entertainment value is there for someone who is in search of a good mystery thriller film with a plethora of familiar faces.
Fun Fact: Nick talks to Cliff about a dictator's palace with a lock-box full of Avengers memorabilia including Iron Man. Timothy Olyphant (Nick) was considered for the role of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which stars Chris Hemsworth (Kale) as Thor.
