Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Michael Gambon, Charles Dance, Kellie Bright, Martin Freeman, Rhona Mitra
Review: Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen), the U.K.'s hottest comic sensation, makes his way to American audiences with Ali G Indahouse. In his big-screen debut, the chilled-out, hip-hopping, white gangsta-rapper wannabe finds himself in the bizarre position of having to resolve one of Great Britain's biggest national and political scandals. Abetted by his loyal crew, the West Staines Massive and long-suffering girlfriend Me Julie (Kellie Bright), he emerges as the unlikeliest of heroes. While Ali G is one of Sacha Baron Cohen's brilliant characters, Ali G Indahouse lacks a lot of substance compared to the TV show, Da Ali G Show. The television show is far more witty and direct in attacking cultural stereotypes and challenging authority. One of the things that made the TV show great, was Ali G hilariously confronting real life politicians about real life issues. The movie however, concocts a completely fictitious story in addition to a lot of raunchy comedy. While there are plenty of laughs throughout, Ali G Indahouse lacks what makes the character truly great. Fans of Baron Cohen will certainly like this movie, but those unaware of this character ought to check out Da Ali G Show to truly experience the best that Ali G has to offer.
Fun Fact: In May 2012, local councilors in Staines voted to to officially rename the town "Staines-Upon-Thames", in order to boost local economy and avoid gangland associations due to the negative portrayal of the town in this film.
