Review: A South London gang of teenagers and their leader Moses (John Boyega) attempt to mug a nurse named Sam (Jodie Whitaker) who lives on their block. The mugging gets interrupted when an unidentified creature falls from the sky and crash lands nearby. As the block gets invaded by a barrage of similar animalistic aliens, Moses' gang and Sam must work together to defend their neighborhood from these malevolent extraterrestrials. Attack the Block is an action-packed and highly entertaining film. While not overly scary, this movie certainly has its share of startling moments. There's also a fair bit of comedy as our ragtag gang attempts to survive an extraterrestrial war zone with swords and fireworks. The aliens are simple, yet fun; depicting some kind of cross between a dog and a gorilla with a fluorescent mouth and spiky black fur. This film ended up being a great attempt at the cliché alien invasion movie. Several years before being introduced to more mainstream audiences via Star Wars: The Force Awakens, John Boyega does a great job portraying our misunderstood anti-hero. The story was original and unexpectedly heartfelt while maintaining all of the gore, suspense, and chaos that one might expect from a science fiction horror film. Some of the dialogue was a bit difficult to understand, but given the setting, the usage of South London teenage slang was appropriate. Attack the Block was a fun movie to watch, and I highly recommend it to all fans of sci-fi and horror alike.

Fun Fact: Writer/director Joe Cornish was inspired to make this film after actually being mugged in real-life one night (much in the same way Sam was portrayed in the film). He noticed his five young assailants were as scared as he was, and started researching their lives. Cornish interviewed various kids in youth groups in order to find out what kind of weapons they would use if an alien invasion occurred.
