Review:
It's horror on the high-seas when a group of heavily armed hijackers board an abandoned luxury ocean liner looking for a big score. Soon they must survive the deadly grasp of man-eating sea creatures who are ready for some ship-board dining. Writer-Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy,
Odd Thomas
) has created a B-movie that is fun, funny, and so very '90s. Now, let's not kid ourselves,
Deep Rising
is really just a clone of
Aliens
, but it definitely knows it. And in knowing so it takes full advantage of having fun with what audiences would come to expect. The characters get picked off one by one and it's a race to get of the ship before the creatures close in. The creature design is unique as it is slimy, although some of the CGI effects look rather dated. The cast appears to be trying to keep from smiling or laughing at the ridiculous things they get to do, say, and see in this creature feature. This one a self-aware, cheesy fun B-movie ride that includes a jet ski chase...what more could you ask for?
Stars (out of 4):
Fun Fact:
Famke Janssen was almost not cast in this movie because the producers felt she was too recognizable from
GoldenEye
(1995).
