Review: After rescuing a Chinese journalist, black-ops agent Mallory Kane (MMA superstar Gina Carano) is double-crossed by someone in her own agency. Now, with assassins hot on her trail, Mallory decides to turn the tables and fight her way through multiple mercenaries to find out who's responsible - and make them pay!
Haywire is an adrenaline-fueled, action-packed thriller that gives audiences what they want - bone-crunching stunts actually performed by the actors. This definitely enhanced my enjoyment. Watching Gina Carano and Michael Fassbender fight hand-to-hand in a hotel room is one of the most intense, brutal, and relentless movie fights EVER!!! That scene alone is worth the price of admission.
Gina Carano has tremendous screen presence and her physicality is unmatched. What I like the most is that her being a woman is shown as a tremendous strength and an asset without making it a transparent political statement. Carano's as tough, smart, and strong as all of the men she deals with, (better, stronger, and faster actually) and she knows it. And all of the men can't quite see past her being a woman. Being a stone-cold black ops agent has nothing to do with men and women, it has to do with will, training, focus, awareness, and attitude - and Gina Carano's Mallory is a furious fighter that doesn't give up or back down.
The all-star cast is quite amazing as well! With Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, and the late-great Bill Paxton, you know that you are in for a great time.
The story is quite simple, which is a good thing, and with a running time of 93 minutes you know that Haywire is lean and mean. It's certainly one of the most entertaining action flicks I've seen in years. If you're looking for some unbelievable fight scenes, incredible stunts, and MMA's Gina Carano hunting down some of the best actor's ever assembled, then strap in because things are gonna go - Haywire!
Fun Fact: According to Gina Carano, she was supposed to miss when she threw the vase at Michael Fassbender, but she had an adrenaline rush when they were shooting and smashed the vase against Fassbender's head.
