Review: Peter Plunkett (Peter O'Toole) attempts to fill his castle hotel and save his business by claiming that it's haunted. When actual ghosts show up scares, laughs and romance find their way into the castle. High Spirits has a lot going for it. It's written and directed by Neil Jordan, and it has a great cast of dependable actors like Peter O'Toole, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Tilly, Peter Gallagher, Martin Ferrero, Daryl Hannah, Liam Neeson... and it also has Steve Guttenberg. The set up is interesting and quirky, but it quickly becomes a mess of plots, relationships, and characters that aren't very funny, scary, or interesting. It's truly a mess and a big disappointment. From my internet research Writer and Director Neil Jordan says that the movie was changed in editing. The released version is very different from the one he shot. That might be why it's not very good. Who knows? We probably won't see that version, but the one we can watch isn't worth watching, sorry to say.
