Review: Heralded as "the Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies" by Betsy Sherman of The Boston Globe, Shakes the Clown is a film-going experience, good or bad, that'll have you asking many odd questions like..."Why is everyone wearing clown makeup?" "Do clowns and mimes really have a deep-seated hatred for each other?" "Can you survive on a party clown income?" and so on and so forth. Bobcat Goldthwait is the writer, director, and star of this bizarre creation. It doesn't quite work as a standard plotted movie, but it excels at creating a world, characters, and a clown culture that really intrigued me. It's quite funny, vulgar, and purposefully weird. I wasn't quite sure what I was watching at times, but it definitely made me want to watch it again so that I can examine it a little more closely. It's was like getting unsuspectingly hit in face with a pie, but you weren't too sure what was in the pie, it just smelled kinda weird. It's a cult classic for sure, and features a creepy villain in Tom Kenny, the future voice of Spongebob Squarepants.
Fun Fact: Writer, Director, and actor Bobcat Goldthwait and actor Tom Kenny were childhood friends.
