Review:
Set in 1650 Kilkenny in a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn (Honor Kneafsey), comes to Ireland with her father Bill (Sean Bean) to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild native girl, Mebh (Eva Whittaker), their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.
Wolfwalkers
is a tale of acceptance and adventure, and I absolutely loved it. If I didn't know this film was made in 2020, you could have convinced me that this was a classic animated film from many years ago. It honestly reminded me of
Sleeping Beauty
with how it was masterfully and intricately drawn. The classic, hand-drawn animation style was the thing that stood out to me right away. It was beautiful, and really brought the setting of 1600s Ireland to life. One of the coolest things about
Sleeping Beauty
is that there really isn't a lot of dialogue, and the story emotes from the animation as if it's a secondary character. There is a lot more dialogue in
Wolfwalkers
, but I still think a lot of the emotion of the story is derived from the beautiful animation. The contrasting styles with which certain settings are animated in this film are evident. The town of Kilkenny, who's Lord Protector (Simon McBurney) aims to destroy and suppress the wolves, is drawn in a more rigid, angular, prison-like way using greys and less vibrant hues. In contrast, the forest is drawn with vibrant greens that you would expect from a natural Ireland landscape, coupled with more free-formed animation to elicit a sense of being free and one with nature. It's actually a pretty interesting viewing experience.
The story is very fun as well, as Robyn and Mebh develop a wonderful friendship and look to find Mebh's mother who has gone missing. Wolfwalkers become wolves when they sleep, and can only wake up when their wolf form returns to their human form. This leads the girls to believe that Mebh's mother, Moll (Maria Doyle Kennedy), has been captured. The girls' budding friendship, their quest to find Mebh's mother, and their plea to make Robyn's father understand their plight is heartfelt, sincere, and gripping.
Wolfwalkers
is truly a beautiful, action-packed film that both adults and kids will be sure to enjoy. Not to mention, it has a fantastic score of Irish music that really fits the film. I really enjoyed this and it's no surprise that this film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2021 Oscars. Don't sleep on
Wolfwalkers
because it's legitimately a great movie. And not for nothing, but if you do sleep on it, you might turn into a wolf. Just warning you!
