Review: Based on the Elmore Leonard short story, this remake of the 1957 western tells the story of a small-time rancher (Christian Bale) who agrees to hold a captured outlaw (Russell Crowe) while awaiting a train to Yuma. A battle of wills and bullets ensues between the two men as they try to stay alive until justice can be served. This is, without a doubt, a remake that works. It's not only a great western, but a wonderful acted, directed, written, photographed and edited movie. The story and characters effortlessly draw you in. And the tension between the the leads will have you on the edge of your seat. Russell Crowe and Christian Bale are perfect here. They are complicated, flawed, lost men of the west that struggle to survive with the times, environment, and themselves. This is a good movie. Director James Mangold has put out a string of solid movies throughout his career and 3:10 to Yuma is definitely one of his best.
