Review: Four decades after his killing spree on Halloween night, Michael Myers has once again escaped and is returning to Haddonfield for more holiday horror. Now, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) must confront the boogeyman that has haunted her since that fateful night.

Halloween is a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 original, Halloween. It deliberately ignores all of the sequels, remakes, and reboots, which is certainly one of the best aspects of the movie. It simplifies the story and makes Michael Myers scary, menacing, and down-right deadly - just like the original. Myers is a ruthless killer that stalks his prey at random and is purely and simply evil. Finally, he's frightening again!

And even though Jamie Lee Curtis has faced off against Michael Myers numerous times (Halloween, Halloween II, Halloween H20, Halloween: Resurrection) here we get a proper version of her heroine, Laurie Strode. A woman that has survived an unspeakable trauma and has dedicated her life to ending that of Michael Myers. She's broken, sad, grieving, and traumatized. She becomes almost as ruthless and cold as Myers. It's quite a remarkable performance from Curtis.

Another aspect that adds so much mood and creepy suspense to the film is it's score. The music was done by the original's maestro John Carpenter along with his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies. They don't just repeat the standard themes of the original, but a new drive and purpose to it. Plus, they create new wonderfully eerie music cues that will send chill's down the spines of those that are already fans of Carpenter's music and maybe a new generation of listeners, too.

The movie is really about how a single event can have an effect on multiple generations. That's a very interesting take on how the townspeople of Haddonfield live with Myers' murderous rampage during that night in 1978. It's definitely a breath of fresh air in a franchise such as this.

Now, I did really enjoy Halloween, but is does have a few quirks, characters, and plot points that don't quite add up, which I can see disappointing some fans, but it's certainly suspenseful, scary, and intense like the original. I recommend checking this one out - it's more treat than trick.

Fun Fact: Jake Gyllenhaal helped convince Jamie Lee Curtis to reprise her role of Laurie Strode for the film. Jake Gyllenhaal is a family friend of Curtis' and is dubbed by her as an unofficial godson.
