Review: As night falls on a small California town, the dead rise from their graves, mausoleums, and morgues. Now the townspeople must fight to survive until sunrise.
These days zombie movies are dime a dozen. However, Zombie Night does rise (pun intended) to the occasion to give fans of the sub-horror genre an entertaining romp with a twist. These are the more classic, slow moving zombies, but with more aggressive tendencies toward their potential living victims.
It's nice to see stars like Anthony Michael Hall, Daryl Hannah, Alan Ruck, and Mrs. Partridge herself, Shirley Jones, fighting off hordes of zombies and trying to survive the night. It's just a shame that they don't really have characters to play, really just roles like the dad, the mom, the narcissistic neighbor, and the fearful grandma. They're all good actors. I just wish they had more to do.
Like all zombie movies the premise is simple - survive. And Zombie Night is no different, but the editing, pacing, and underdeveloped characters makes it hard to stay focused and root for our protagonists. It seemed to me that the filmmakers had a hard time focusing on what kind of a zombie movie they were making. It's a battle between a homage to classic Romero dead movies and take what came before and put a little spin on it, that could have made Zombie Night a unique entry in the dying (yes, pun intended) zombie horror genre.
This is definitely one for die hard zombie fans! It has plenty of blood, guts, and ghoulish makeup effects to keep you happy. I'm dead serious! (Okay, that pun was totally unintentional!)
