Review:
Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) has been suspended as the Police Chief of Paradise, but his "copley intuition" won't go to waste. When a series of mysterious murders begin around Boston, Captain Healy (Stephen McHattie) asks Jesse to be a consultant on the investigation. Meanwhile, Paradise Police Officers Rose (Kathy Baker) and Suitcase (Kohl Sudduth) have to handle a local crime spree all on their own. Can Jesse handle his suspension, battle the bottle, keep his nose out of Paradise police business, and find the serial killer before he or she strikes again? It's time for some good police work in
Jesse Stone: No Remorse
.
In this 6th installment in the popular "Jesse Stone" TV-Movie series, Stone is feeling adrift after being suspended as the police chief of the sleepy town of Paradise, Massachusetts. His fellow officers, his psychiatrist (William Devane), and his friend and State Homicide Commander Healy, all want to help Jesse, but are acutely aware that his stubbornness and self-destructive behavior will not make that easy. But when a rash of serial murders start, Healy asks for Jesse to help with the investigation. This will keep Jesse busy doing what he does best and away from his battle with booze.
As always, Selleck is perfect as Jesse Stone. He's tough, flawed, and always determined to make sure justice is served. And this time around it's great to see the character show, in his specific way, how much he cares for his two loyal deputies played by Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth, especially when he's no longer their chief. And I really enjoyed the extra time spent with both Rose and Suitcase as they manage to run the Paradise Police Department without Jesse there. They are unique characters that find themselves in over their heads when a crime spree spreads through Paradise. Can they rise to the occasion and become cops like Jesse or use what he's taught them to save the day?
With Jesse's investigation, he has to again interact with "small-time boxing promoter" Gino Fish (William Sadler). Sadler is a great actor and relishes the scenes where he verbally spars with Selleck's Stone. He's funny, mysterious, and very intimidating. In
Jesse Stone: No Remorse
, one of the homicide victims happens to be a former associate of Mr. Fish so Jesse has to visit with him more often than he has in previous films in the series. And we get more of an insight into this intriguing character which is just wonderful.
After the being a bit disappointment with the last entry,
Jesse Stone: Thin Ice
(2009)
, I'm happy to report that
Jesse Stone: No Remorse
gets things back on course and offers fans great story-lines, character growth, and the compelling question of what's to become of our flawed hero, Jesse Stone. This might very well be one of the best films in the series. I highly recommend it, but then again I enjoy all of the mysteries that the "Jesse Stone" series has to offer.
Stars (out of 4):
